Another section here...
I'm sure you've seen activities which use notices, classified ads, signs, etc. with sloppy English. Some of these have been featured in coursebooks, worksheets, collections, thanks to authors and the internet. (Links coming...)
One of my obsessions (yeah, it's rather involuntary!) is to always have a look at the package of products to see how they could manage to translate some important information into English.
BKV ("Hungarian Transport Company") used to be an excellent source if you needed your daily dose of a smile, especially with their terms of service ("Utazási feltételek"). Luckily, things have changed for the better and now they have a more able person/company doing the English translations. Nevertheless, their multiple attempt at translating "Az ajtónak támaszkodni és az alsó lépcsőn utazni tilos!" never fails to amuse me (I think they had three different versions with blatant mistakes till they finally got it right...). This well-known example inspired the title of the section where I'll be sharing some of thge most spine-chilling examples of foul attempts. What a torture...
[pic missing!] --> I'd be ever so grateful if you could send me a picture of this BKV sign!
While we are at it, here's a worksheet you can use to exploit the idea of misprints/ambiguity in advertisements. Original grabbed from www.englishonline.hu, facelift done by me.
Leaving against the door...
